Error 0x8ddd0018 is a Windows Update error that displays the error message; "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. The necessary service "Automatic Updates" (WUAUSERV) is not started or Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is disabled. Error 0x8DDD0018"

Causes of the Error 0x8ddd0018

This error occurs if Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) or the Automatic Update service are disabled.

The exception is when Windows XP Service Pack 2 is installed, it appears that in some cases the service can be disabled that results in the generation of the Windows Update error code 0x8ddd0018.

To ease the confusion Microsoft have added following description to BITS:

Transfers files in the background using idle network bandwidth. If the service is stopped, features such as Windows Update, and MSN Explorer will be unable to automatically download programs and other information.

If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it may fail to transfer files if they do not have a fail safe mechanism to transfer files directly through IE in case BITS has been disabled.

Solution to the Error 0x8ddd0018

You have to make sure that BITS and the Automatic Updates service are started. Follow the steps given below:

1. a) Click Start.
2. b) Click Run.
3. c) In the box type services.msc.
4. d) Click OK.
5. e) In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates.
6. f) Click Properties.
7. g) In the Startup type list, click Automatic.
8. h) Click Apply.
9. i) If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start.
10. j) Click OK.
11. k) Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
12. l) Click Properties.
13. m) In the Startup type list, click Manual.
14. n) Click Apply.
15. o) If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start.
16. p) Click OK.
