What is a computer firewall?

The word firewall is generally a wall constructed in buildings to protect the buildings from accidental fires. But, to our surprise, this word “Firewall” is most popular among computer professionals and other daily users of computers. But, where the fire and where the wall in computer is?! Let us not run away! Let us see what is actually meant by computer firewall, where and when it used, what are its types etc.

What is meant by the word “Firewall” in computer?

Perhaps, this is the first question to be answered when we talk about firewalls in computers. It is perhaps just like ticket collector at the entrance of railway stations. A ticket collector will ask for tickets, when passengers goes out of railway station, perhaps to make sure that the passenger has purchased the tickets. A firewall in computer works similar to the ticket collector. It gives protection to the computer, by holding off harmful data from entering into the system. We today, all use the internet to get useful information. Connecting to the internet without firewall is, just like the railway station entrances without ticket collectors.

What happens if one connects to internet without firewall?

Connecting to the internet without firewall will allow some person to have an unauthorized access to the computer. The person will try to rob confidential information from the computer. Such persons are called as Hackers. A Hacker uses some means to break into the system. After that, he steals the information, which he wants from the computer and copies onto his computer.

When firewalls are used?

As said above, firewalls basically used to protect the computer from the hackers, in the event of internet connection. Apart from it, it used to protect computer in a Local Area Network also. There are some firewalls that can be installed in the server also. These firewalls are used by corporate sector industries to block access to particular set of domains, which are identified by domain names.
