How to fix the Windows Me Shutdown Problems?

  • Incorrect hardware configuration or damaged hardware may cause this problem.




How to fix these problems? 

A) Verify if a program in the StartUp folder conflicts with the startup process:

* Click Start.

* Click Run.

* In the Open box type msconfig.

* Click OK.


Now,

* Click Selective Startup.

* Clear the Load Startup Group Items check box.

* Click Apply.

* Click OK.

* Restart PC.


Now check whether your PC shuts down properly. If it shuts down properly then one of your startup programs may be causing this problem. To find out which startup program is causing this problem.

* Click Start.

* Click Run.

* In the Open box type msconfig.

* Click OK.

* On the Startup tab.

* Select a check box.

* Click OK.

* Restart PC.


Now check whether the startup program you disabled caused the problem. If not, repeat this procedure until you find out the cause of the problem.

Still you are not able to solve the problem then re enable the startup programs and click to select the Load Startup Group Items check box.

B) Verify whether the shutdown problem is caused by a command or driver that is loaded automatically from the Win.ini or System.ini files:

* Click Start.
* Click Run.
* In the open box type msconfig.
* Click OK.
* Click Selective Startup.
* Clear the "Process Win.ini file" check box.
* Clear the "Process System.ini file" check box.
* Click OK.
* Restart the PC.


Still your PC does not shut down properly. Repeat the procedure to select the check boxes.

C) Now find out if the problem is caused by the device drivers. You have to disable some device drivers such as sound card drivers, video adapter drivers, and network adapter drivers.

Steps to disable device drivers 

* Right click My Computer icon.

* Click Properties.

* Click the Device Manager tab.

* Double click a device type such as Sound, Video, and Game Controllers to expand it.

* Click one of the listed devices.

* Click Properties.

* Select the check box "Disable In This Hardware Profile"

* Click OK.

* Restart your PC.

Troubleshooting display problems 


Still your PC does not shut down properly, disable a different item. Now test your video adapter.

* Click Start.

* Click Run.

* In the open box type msconfig.

* Click OK.

* Click Advanced.

* Select the VGA 640x480x16 check box.

* Click OK.


If the problem is not solved yet re enable sound card, video adapter, and network adapter. Clear the Disable In This Hardware Profile check box.

If you found any difficulties in changing the video adapter by using the above steps then change your video adapter driver to the Standard VGA driver by using following steps.

* Click Start.

* Select Settings.

* Click Control Panel.

* Double click Display.

* Click the Settings tab.

* Click Advanced.

* Click the Adapter tab.

* Click Change.

* Click Next.

* Click Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location to select the required driver.

* Click Next.

* Click Show All Hardware.

* Click Standard Display Types in the Manufacturer box.

* Click Standard Display Adapter (VGA) in the Models box.

* Click Next.

* Click Yes.

* Click Next.

* Click Finish.

* Click Close.

* Restart your PC.


Contact your video adapter manufacturer to know about the availability of an updated version of Windows Me video adapter driver, if the problem is solved by changing your video adapter to the Standard VGA driver.

D) Check a damaged exit sound file:

* Click Start.

* Select Settings.

* Click Control Panel.

* Double-click Sounds and Multimedia.

* Click Exit Windows in the Sound Events box.

* Click None in the Name box.

* Click OK.

* Restart your computer.


If the problem is solved then you must replace your damaged Exit Windows sound file. To replace the sound file, take a backup.

Still you face the problem in shutting down PC then restore your original Exit Windows sound then follow the steps given below:

E) Check whether Advanced Power Management (APM) is causing the shutdown.

Follow the steps to disable Advanced Power Management (APM):

* Click Start.

* Select Settings.

* Click Control Panel.

* Double click System.

* Click the Device Manager tab.

* To expand it double click the System Devices branch.

* Double click Advanced Power Management in the device list.

* Click the Settings tab.

* Click to select the Force APM 1.0 Mode.

* "Disable Power Status Polling" check boxes.

* Click OK until you return to Control Panel.

* Restart your computer.


Still your computer does not shut down properly, repeat the above steps and click to clear the Force APM 1.0 Mode and Disable Power Status Polling check boxes.

F) Verify a virtual device driver (.vxd file):

* Click Start.

* Click Run.

* In the open box type msconfig.

* Click OK.

* Click Selective Startup.

* Clear the Load Static VxDs check box.

* Click OK.

* Restart PC.


Still your PC does not shut down properly, repeat the above steps and click to select the check box.

Verify the properties of the incompatible static .vxd file to confirm the program it is associated with.

Uninstall and then reinstall the program to replace the .vxd file with a new copy.

Steps to check the properties of a file 

* Click Start.

* Click Search.

* Type the name of the file in the For Files or Folders box.

* Click Search Now.


After the file you are looking for is displayed in the list.

* Right click the file.

* Click Properties.


G) Kindly confirm whether the problem is listed in the startup log file. Check your startup log file (Bootlog.prv) to find information about problems that occur during shutdown. The Bootlog.prv file is a hidden file in the root folder of drive C.

If Windows is configured to hide system files, use the steps given below to display hidden files.

* Double click My Computer icon.

* Click Folder Options on the Tools menu.

* Click the View tab.

* Clear the "Hide protected operating system files" check box.

* Click yes when you are prompted to confirm this action.

* Click OK.

Now look for the Bootlog.prv file again 

Still you don't find this file on your hard drive, follow the steps given below to create a new file:

* Click Start.

* Click Shut Down.

* Select "Shut Down" check box.

* Click OK.


Still your PC doesn't shut down automatically, use power button of your PC to turn it off. Leave your PC off for approximately 15 seconds. Now turn on your PC.

While starting your PC press and hold the CTRL key. When the Startup menu is displayed, use the UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW keys to choose Logged (BOOTLOG.TXT), and then press ENTER. Windows will start now.

* Click Start.

* Click Shut Down.

* Click Restart.

* Click OK.

How to review startup log file? 

*Double-click My Computer.

* Double click drive C.

*Select the Bootlog.prv file.

* Double click the Bootlog.prv file.


See the prompt if you are prompted to select a program to use to open the file.

* Click WordPad, Notepad, or any text editor in the list.

* Select "Terminate=" entries to get clues about the cause of the problem.


If a process that is started by "Terminate=" entry is finished successfully, the file contains a matching "EndTerminate=" entry.
Verify the last line in the Bootlog.prv file to see if it is one of these items:

a) Terminate=Query Drivers: Usually a Memory Manager problem. Your PC might have defective memory chips or damaged files.

Solution to this problem is to reinstall Windows.

b) Terminate=Reset Display: Try installing an updated video adapter driver.

c) Terminate=RIT: It is a timer-related problem with the sound card or mouse driver may be older.

Solution to this problem is to install updated drivers for these devices.

d) Terminate=Win32: A program might not shut down properly.
