Now let us install hard drive / CDROM drive

The installation of a hard drive or CDROM for your cheap computer is relatively straight forward but it can be plugged in wrong way so make sure you follow the directions carefully. To install hard drive correctly is very important as it will contain your operting system and the precious data. Hence install hard drive carefully. Please follow these steps to install the hard drive.

IDE Configuration Pins

Locate the IDE Configuration Pins on the Hard Drive. These can usually be found next to the power and data connections, and will be a group of six or eight small pins with a small plastic 'jumper' attached between two of the pins. If this is to be the only HDD in your PC, then set this to Master. Alternatively, if this is to be an additional HDD then it must be set to Slave.

I recommend you to install hard drive as the master and your CDROM as slave.

Note: I recommend you to install hard drive with higher RPM. As rotational speed of drive is far more important for performance than transfer rate. Remember that reading the data is a mechanical process.

Difference Between Hard drive & Floppy Drive

The Hard Drive differs from the Floppy Drive in that it is usually inserted from within the PC case. On one end of the Hard Drive will be the sockets for connecting the cables. This end must point into the case such that the cables can be connected later on. Gently slide the Hard Drive into the bay that now holds the floppy drive above. Move the drive around until you find the fixing points and use the standard screws to secure it. Clear any obstructions to this insertion from inside the case if necessary.
Once inserted, use the coarse threaded screws to secure the drive to the case.

Setting Up the Drive

Two seperate cables plug into your hard drive or CDROM, the power and an IDE cable. The power cable powers the drive and the IDE cable connects the drive with your the motherboard of cheap computer. The drive also has a set of jumper pins that need to be configured for the drive to work.

Jumper Pins for Master / Slave Setting

A-Jumper Pins - This is where you set you drive to either Master or Slave for you cheap computer. I suggest you set your hard drive up as the master and your CDROM as slave. A diagram for the jumper configuration should be on the top of your drive.

B-IDE Plug - Attach the IDE cable here. The last plug on the cable is the master plug and the middle plug is the slave plug. Make sure you use the plug that you set up with jumper pins. The IDE cable should have a notch so that it is lugged in correctly but if not the IDE cable the red wire on the IDE cable should face the red wire on the power cable.

C-Power Plug - This is where the power cable for your drive attaches. This should be notched for easy plug in as well, but if not remember that the red wire on the power plug should face towards the red wire on the IDE cable.

IDE Cable

Now to begin, plug the IDE cable into an IDE socket on the motherboard of your cheap computer, they are usually coloured the same way as on of the ends of the IDE cable, if not it is the plug that is the longest away from the other plugs that goes into the motherboard for your cheap computer.

There should be a notch on the IDE cable that ensures that you plug it in the right way but if not then the red wire should face towards the bottom of your cheap computer case.

Screwing In The Drive

Now that the drive is all plugged in, it is time to screw the drive into your cheap computer case. Hard drives screw into the smaller 3 1/2" bays and CDROMs screw into the larger 5 1/4" bays.

Just screw the drive into the desired slot in your cheap computer case and voila!

Plugging in The Drive

Like the hard drive and CDROM the floppy drive has 2 cables that plug into it, the IDE cable and the power, but for the floppy drive both of these cables look different. The Floppy drive IDE and power cables are both smaller than their counterparts.

Floppy Disk

A-Power Plug - This is where the power cable for your drive attaches. The power plug for the floppy drive of your cheap computer will only fit in one way.

B-IDE Plug - Attach the IDE cable here. The Plug for you floppy drive will only fit in one way and should be easy to distiguish as it is a smaller plug than the IDE plug for hard drives and CDROMs. Now to plug in the cables. Attach both the power and IDE cables to the floppy drive of your cheap computer. Now plug the floppy IDE cable into your cheap computers motherboard. The cable should fit in only one way, due to the notches on it, but if not then, like the hard drive IDE cables, the red wire should face towards the bottom of your cheap computer case.

Screwing In The Drive

Once you've got it all plugged in, screw the drive into one of the 3 1/2" floppy drive bays. Make sure you screw the drive into one of the bays with access to the outside world, or you might find it a little difficult to actually use the drive when your close up your cheap computer case.

Now you must enter the system BIOS and make sure the appropriate IDE channel is set to AUTO, in order to autodetect the drives. Most motherboards ship with IDE channels set to AUTO by default.
