KYLIN: CHINA’S Operating SystemIn a significant major development, china, the world’s second super power, has developed a new operating system, named Kylin. The operating system which is focused on server sided market, is more secured than other server based operating systems. It is said that, this most significant development has boosted china’s national security. The operating system has passed the assessment test conducted by the panel of experts from state 863 Hi-Tech Research and Development Program.
The Kylin operating system focuses on high performance, reliability and security. The development program was first funded by the Chinese government sponsored R&D program during 2002. The operating system developed in a hierarchical model, in which, the kernel layer is based on Mach, the system service layer is based on FreeBSD and the desktop environment is similar to that of Windows. The operating system standards are similar to UNIX standards, and are highly compatible with Linux binaries. The kernel layer is responsible for initializing hardware, providing basic memory management routines, and managing tasks. The system service layer is responsible for providing UFS2 and BSD network protocol functions. Development at the National University of Defense TechnologyThe operating system was on development at the National University of Defense Technology. The operating system was designated as the document processing operating system. It can now turn China into super power in IT product development. The powerfulness, stronger security of the operating system may make Chinese people to replace the foreign operating systems. In China, Kylin was listed among the best 10 scientific and Technological Progresses News of Higher Learning Institutes during 2005. 64-bit operating system with high security levelFor a long time, China lacked of independent R & D in software industry. This made China to make use of foreign operating systems. This allowed software industry in China to be ruled by the foreign software developers. Thus, China decided to bring out the Kylin operating system into its market, thus tightening the national security. In 2001, it was decided by the central government to assign the task of developing operating system which protects intellectual rights of its citizens, to the Computer Science Institute of National University of Defense Technology. After a couple of strong innovations and researches, the project group involved in the task brought out a 64-bit operating system with high security level (B2 class). This operating system developed, not only found compatibility with other operating systems developed across the world, but also supports several multiprocessors and computers of different structures. The operating system became the first operating system without Linux kernel that has obtained Linux Global Authentication given by the International Free Standard Group (IFSG). Unfortunately, the download page for the operating system is nonfunctional. It will be made available for downloads in the near future. The dominance of IT product by the foreigners in China will get reduced, once this operating system made popular among Chinese population. The security of data will be stronger, because, it is being developed by the Chinese government and people themselves.
