MIT’s ambitious plan to develop $ 100 Laptop

Low cost Laptop Computer will be a reality. It will cost around 100 dollars. A low-cost computer for the masses moved one step closer to reality with MIT's new display technology. Mr. Negroponte, the co-founder of the Media Lab at MIT, is working on making this a reality.

Who will benefit?

Mr. Negroponte’s nonprofit group, called One Laptop Per Child, is working on 100 dollar Laptop and wants to distribute 15 million Laptops in developing countries. He is passionate about it and thinks that this is the most important thing in his life. His great idea is an educational project. He wants to spread it like Open source systems. Governments should invest money and buy these laptops for around $ 100 and give it free to students. This will help students and help in their growth. One way of enriching student’s life.

What are the specifications?

The 100 dollar Laptop will be powered by 500 Mhz CPU with 1 GB memory. It will come with dual mode display which can be used in colour or black and white mode. It can be used as an electronic book and Laptop.

MIT’s flat flexible printed display can be used in this low cost Laptop. These displays are low cost. They consume very less power. Another advantage. As most of the developing countries have power problem at remote places.

These laptops will be powered by Electrical supply, battery or through the side mounted windup crank.

The Laptop will be having open source Linux. It will come wit 4 USB ports and Wi Fi connection. Also it will come with peer to peer networking to share single internet connection.

Google, Red Hat, BrightStar, AMD and News Corp are working together with MIT to produce around 10 million units within a year. They want to produce around 100 million units by 2007.

Personal Internet Connector from AMD will be available at price of $ 185. But this is without display.

An Indian company is also planning to develop the low cost home computer for the price of $ 75.

Will this be a reality for the students of developing countries?
