Many servers are already patched and have been protected against the threat. The sober worm contains an algorithm that every few days generates new URL addresses from which it then attempts to download malicious code. Due to this ability Sober worm has the tendency to spread again in the future.

The Sober worm and its variants are controlled by German hackers and has already gain the status of most dreaded worm. The specialty of Sober worm is that it does not target any specific vulnerability but it force the users to open a malicious file attachment in e-mails and click on links that contain malicious code.

History of sober virus

As you know the earlier version of the worm appeared on Nov. 22, which was the inauguration day for Germany's first lady chancellor. It was programmed to be reactivated at zero hours GMT on Jan 5, when it was supposed to download and run malicious files from specific domains.

This version of Sober worm comes with its own SMTP engine to spread itself. This time the code has been programmed to send out copies much quicker than previous versions. So far an enormous amount of e-mail traffic is being generated by it. The Leader in Integrated Message Management, Postini has blocked over 50 million e-mails containing the latest Sober variant for its clients.

Latest variant

Although Sober worms are not new, but its latest variant is widely distributed than other recent versions because it is being simultaneously sent out from large numbers of Sober-infected bots. The latest version of Sober worm also sends messages in both German and English language as its earlier version.

In the history of worms Sober is seemed to be the most deadly worm. Since it has the tremendous propagation capability. Anti-spam e-mail security companies have already warned Internet users about a new variant of the Sober worm that was attacking e-mail servers across the world.
