Rack Mount Computers

Rack mount computers are basically industrial computers. Rack mount computers are specially designed for industrial applications. They can withstand higher temperature and vibration. They are dust proof. They can work in harsh industrial atmosphere and immune to noise.

These computers are mounted in standard 19” Din racks. That is why they are known as Rack Mount Computers. Rack mount computers are available in 1U, 2U, 4 U and 8 U sizes. However 4u rack mount industrial computers are quite popular. Depending on the complexity of the application the size increases.

These Rack Mount Computers are designed for harsh industrial applications, usually they have redundant power supply, mirrored hard drives ( RAID configuration) to protect the precious data.

Applications of Rack Mount Computer

Rack mount computers are generally used for server applications. Rugged 19” Rack mount chassis offers industrial quality design, reliable space saving performance and flexibility to use in many server applications. Models are available with built in KVM switches for easy controlling and monitoring up to 8 residing servers. KVM stands for Keyboard, Video and Mouse. High performance P4 servers are available in 1U rack mount enclosures. Rack mount computers have hot swap SCSI Hard drives. Hot swap means you can remove the hard drive under power. This facility allows user for online maintenance.

Rack mount computers can work in temperature range from 0 – 50 Deg. C. They have wide input voltage range from 90 –264 Vac. Models are available with DC power supply options. Generally Rack mount Industrial computers are supplied with Dual redundant hot swap power supplies. There are 2 power supplies i.e. Primary and Secondary. Generally Primary power supply is in operation and secondary acts as back up power supply.

In case of failure of primary power supply, secondary power supply takes over. You get the LED indication on the case. If hot swapping is in built, you can remove the primary power supply under power and do the on line maintenance. This facility is very important for mission critical applications where you have to run your processes with out any interruption.

High Performance Servers

Latest high performance servers are available with dual processors, dual hot redundant power supplies, hot swappable hard drives and gigabit Ethernet interfaces. They have integrated swappable redundant fan modules. Typical system monitoring functions include alarming on fan speeds and temperature, remote alarming etc. Some manufacturers give alarm card option for alerting over Ethernet.

Higher end Rack server systems are generally housed in vertical rack cabinets. A typical Rack server system consists of following components.

1) Ethernet Hubs / Switches

2) Load balancers

3) Routers

4) Disk Arrays

5) Keyboards

6) Monitors

7) UPS systems

8) Patch Panels

9) Multiple Power bus system

There are various types of Rack mount servers. Many systems are customized solutions. Rack mount computers are used in variety of applications like Communications, Internet servers, Data Servers, Military, Defense, Industrial controls etc.
