Longhorn: Microsoft's future Windows release -A reviewLonghorn a codename given to Microsoft's upcoming Windows release as Whistler to the Windows XP. Longhorn is Microsoft's most talked about future Windows release. It is an upcoming ambitious Windows release from Microsoft. Longhorn is Microsoft's dream project once visualized as the minor upgrade version of Windows XP. But now Longhorn will have all possible upgrades with a new security feature called Palladium, 3D-enabled user interface, and... list is very long with many more mind-blowing new features.
Longhorn is the upcoming OS from Windows series of
Microsoft. It will
include new upgraded versions of Windows, Windows Server, .NET, MSN,
Microsoft Office, and other exciting features.
Though a year away from launching, interest
in Longhorn has been building exponentially.
Initially it was expected to be a minor upgrade there is also a minor
Windows Server revision with a number of new features including a
revised task-based user interface, an extensible, dock-like, Sidebar,
and a SQL Server 2003-based storage engine called WinFS (Windows Future
Storage). Microsoft is planning different versions of Windows Longhorn. Longhorn with Task-based interface & many more featuresTotally new task-based interface will be the main attraction of Longhorn. This new user interface is code-named "Aero" and is based on a new .NET-based graphics API called "Avalon," which replaces earlier graphics APIs such as GDI and GDI+ found in Windows XP. To deliver realistic special effects
Longhorn will have 3D video hardware and 3D-enabled user
interface making your desktop more live and realistic. Microsoft is developing the Palladium security
technology along with Intel and AMD, which will be included
in Windows Longhorn version. Palladium stops viruses and
worms. The system won't run malicious programs, preventing
viruses from intruding your system. With integrated recordable DVD capabilities Longhorn will work with every type of recordable DVD format. You will be able to copy video from a digital camcorder directly to recordable DVD. No need of hard drive intervention. An advanced version of the successful Error Reporting Tool (ERT) in Longhorn will enable Microsoft to fix the errors electronically and automatically to users. Find your data on PC more easily with LonghornWith the addition of Relational
Database Capabilities
to the file system Microsoft is trying to relieve a tension of finding
your own data on your own PC. This move by Microsoft is definitely
appreciable since it will save your precious time to find your own
files and folders, email, and stored data on your hard drive. Microsoft is also planning to add a new file system
called Libraries,
that will act as organizer of data in Longhorn, irrespective of where
they are physically stored in the system. With this feature your Photos
& Movies Library would collect links to every digital photo and
digital video on your PC. Longhorn OS will take merely 15 minutes to install with hundreds of new APIs that will let provide access to the new system's features. Instead of Win32 API it will have more advanced new .NET-based API called WinFX with new communications and collaboration system. Curious to know the history
behind the name Longhorn! The name
longhorn is not selected randomly but derived from a saloon named
Longhorn that serves the local skiing population situated close to
Microsoft's headquarters at the foot of Whistler Mountain,
interesting... I hope the launch of the Longhorn will be as interesting
as this.
