After downloading the windows vista beta 1 5231 download, my first impression was not good. May we say, first impression is last impression. Not really. Microsoft has done lot of changes in the new opearating system. Initially it was codenamed as Longhorn which was subsequently changed to Vista.

Let us start with build 5048. There was not much improvements compared to older versions. However Windows Vista Beta 1 is much more impressive than Build 5048. And I must say, they are improving a lot.

Simple Installation 

Installation is simple. It is available on DVD. Setup only prompts you for a few simple items and then starts on its own. And presto, it is all done for you.

Setup prompts you for your product key, presents the End User License Agreement (EULA), and then lets you choose the installation type. Then, you can choose the install partition and the computer name. In the install partition phase, you can perform tasks such as creating, deleting, and formatting partitions as well. During the installation it boots and also after completion of installation it restarts the computer. There are not much changes in taskbar. Then there is a windows search function similar to Mac OS X Tiger.

New look to START Menu

The Start menu, too, has changed little since 5048 and features the similar mix of Windows Vista and XP icons. Start menu looks diiferent but works in equivalent manner. Because search box is available in the Start menu, you can not apply keyboard shortcuts. In XP, if you want to open control panel, you should press windows and C key. However in Vista, if you press C key, it presumes that you are searching for a program.

Confusing Shell Structure

In windows Vista, shell structure is confusing compared to XP. They have introduced the virtual folder which is xml based points to lists of other files and total data in meanuingful ways. Virtual Folders are gives you more information than simple shortcuts. That is smart technology which allows you to organize data in sensible way.

As most of the virtual folders and real folders have same names, there is lot of confusion. Will Microsoft look into that? However Virtual Folders have their advantages also. Now Microsoft has to give more advantages then their previous windows versions. Let us see how best they do it.
