the most of the part of
U.S and Western Europe was taken for a ride by the Zotob worm threat.
Zotob virus attacks computers having Windows 2000 operating system and
takes advantage of a security issue that was addressed by Microsoft
Security Bulletin MS05-039. This worm has many variants that install
malicious software, and then spread over the healthy computers leaving
them infected.

or post their complaint on the Internet Fraud Complaint Center Web
site. Victims outside of the United States should contact the national
law enforcement agency in their country. Microsoft has made available a free software tool to help victims of the Zotob worms. The Zotob worm started spreading on 13 August 2005. This worm and its variants take advantage of the same security flaw that have hit Windows computers, especially those running Windows 2000. The Zotob worm has not even spared systems at ABC, CNN and The New York Times. Debby Fry Wilson, a director of Microsoft Security Response Center said that, "Microsoft has already released the cleaning program. You click on it and it will tell you if you are infected," she said. "And if you are, it will clean the worm off your PC." Microsoft frequently releases a update version of
this tool every month with its security patches. The tool is available
on Microsoft's Web site or downloaded from the Microsoft Download
Center. The updated cleaning program checks for and removes infections
of Zotob and all its variants.
Usually the worms can infect unpatched Windows 2000
systems that aren't protected by a firewall without any user
interaction. Most of the times the worms install a shell program on the
computer to download the actual worm code-using FTP (File Transfer
Protocol). Spreading its effect on new computers. ![]() Subscribe to "COMPTECH" ezine to get the latest news and updates on Computer Hardware, Software, Tips & Tutorials. |
